Table Lamps - Choosing the Right Lighting for Your Home

Table lamps are one of the most important aspects of creating warmth and comfort in your home. From task lighting to indirect room light, a table lamp will add a warm glow without lighting up an entire room. Lamps can help divide a large room into comfortable groupings and focused areas. The right table lamps, placed at table height can assist with reading, handwork and other detailed tasks. But in addition to being functional, table lamps can also be part of a room’s décor.

A quality table lamp may define a space, set a mood, or direct the tone of a room. Poor lighting only detracts from other design elements within a room, but a well planned assortment and precise placement of a variety of table lamps, desk lamps and floor lamps, will enhance and improve a room’s style and elegance.

You can dramatically alter the mood of a room with the home lighting. Home decorating with light is much more than a matter of choosing a few lamps. To create the most pleasing and most soothing effect, you will want to experiment with a variety of different lamps and different wattages.  If you like vibrant color  perhaps Tiffany style table lamps or a contemporary lighting might be your choice.  If you like earthtones for a more subdued look, then traditional table lamps would be a more suitable option.

Small table lamps can help you create an intimate feeling. Commonly used as sources for specific lighting, table lamps and their shades can transform the mood of a room. You should think of your lampshades as fashion accessories. They can also be easily updated when it is time for a seasonal change or a fresh look. Translucent shades, such as those made of natural parchment silk, handmade paper, or linen, softly diffuse light, opaque and semi-opaque shades alter the direction of light and focus the beam of light in a set direction. Stained glass shades, such as those found on reproduction Tiffany style lamps, add the element of color to your lighting décor.

Your choice and placement of lamps should fit the function of the lighting that you desire. Alongside a chair, you may wish to provide a general wash of clear light directed for reading, while other table lamps may provide area lighting, mood lighting or accent lighting. Three-way bulbs can allow one lamp to serve three different functions, from a low romantic mood light, to a general purpose level, to a bright light for maximum visibility. If ceiling lights are not used in a room, you may wish to have the option of full room lighting from strategically placed table lamps with three way bulbs.
